Robin Louis, B.Sc., M.Sc., Ph.D.,
Chairman, Ventures West

Robin Louis is the Chairman of Ventures West Management Inc., one of Canada's largest privately owned venture capital firms. The firm has raised over $700 million with its 8th fund closing recently at $250 million, the largest private venture capital fund ever raised in Canada. Ventures West operates out of four major offices and has invested in more than 130 technology companies. Robin is also the current Chairman of the CVCA, Canada's Venture Capital & Private Equity Association. With over 1000 members, the CVCA represents the majority of venture and private equity capital managed in Canada.

Howard Gwin, BBA
Executive Management Consultant, Software Industry Expert

After spending 13 years at IBM and Xerox in senior sales, marketing and operations roles Howard Gwin joined PeopleSoft Inc. From November 1994 to January 2000, Howard held a variety of executive management positions.  During his tenure, the company grew from <$100M in sales to $1.3B. Starting in January 2000, Howard was President and COO of Solect Technology Group, a global provider of billing, client care and service management software for the telecommunications industry. In April 2000, he helped orchestrate the sale of Solect to Amdocs Inc. (US$1.1B). At the time, it was the largest ever sale for a private Canadian software company.

Dr. Paul Kedrosky
Venture Fellow, Ventures West

Dr. Paul Kedrosky is an award-winning academic, lecturer, and columnist. He has published more than three hundred articles in academic and non-academic publications, including Harvard Business Review, Forbes, the Wall Street Journal, and Brookings Review. In addition, he has lectured and consulted to Fortune 1000 clients in Canada and the U.S. Paul has also been a highly-ranked technology equity research analyst. He founded the technology equity research practice at HSBC James Capel (Canada), and transactions with which he was involved created in excess of a billion dollars in public market value.

He has been a Director of the William J. von Liebig Center at the University of California, San Diego. In that capacity he coordinated the Center's commercialization activities, including more than 30 investments and six companies created. In addition, He is a venture partner with Ventures West, a venture capital firm with offices across Canada.


Jim Charlton
Sr. VP, Investments Information Technology, GrowthWorks

Jim Charlton brings 20 years of venture capital experience to GrowthWorks Capital. Jim joined the GrowthWorks team in 1996. He began his career with Discovery Enterprises, an early stage venture capital firm, and after eight years joined Ventures West Management.

Jim has a BSC in Astronomy from UBC and an MBA from the University of Western Ontario. In addition to his work with Marqui, Jim currently sits on the boards of PiXPO Inc., Apparent Networks, Inc., and youachieve.com. Jim also sits on the Boards of the Canadian Venture Capital Association and the Monte Jade Science and Technology Association.

Dale Borland
President & CEO, Marqui

Dale recently concluded a 15 year tenure with Microsoft Corporation, where he held senior and executive management positions in business development, sales & marketing, operations and IT across UK and Europe, Middle East and Africa (EMEA) regions.

Dale joined the Microsoft's UK Executive Board of Directors in 1994 as Director of their OEM Division, and became Director of Microsoft's Consumer Division in 1996, where he was responsible for building revenues to more than $200M in three years. From there, he assumed responsibility for IT Services and Operations across EMEA, where he was responsible for supporting 7,000 clients and $4B in revenues. Dale was pivotal in driving his team's productivity to the competitive advantage of Microsoft's business divisions across the region. He moved to Vancouver in 2001 to manage Microsoft's Enterprise Service and Partner business in Canada.

Prior to Microsoft, he was a founder member of a Value-Add Reseller business in the UK which grew to more than $250M in revenues before being sold. He started another technology consulting company before being lured to Microsoft.

Dale has a degree in Electronic Engineering and Marketing, and enjoys fishing and golf.
